Before taking up this project, I totally have no idea that there would be a species of eagle that looks like this. The Harpy Eagle. It is the largest and most powerful raptor found in the Americas, and among the largest extant species of eagles in the world. It has such unique head and I was required to draw 3 different angles of it.
A series of birds of prey illustrations done for the Jurong Bird Park. This series was done in pencil sketching style which is a rather rare opportunity and I really enjoying doing it.
Did a series of head mask design based on various species of bats. Namely the Vampire Bat, Malayan Flying Fox, Trefoil Horse-shoe Bat and Cave Nectar Bat. This project is one of the few that I did solely using illustrator. For someone like me who is so used to photoshop for most of my illustrations, it was quite a challenge. However, with this project, I began to love the ‘illustrator’ even more. Even though there are much more to explore as I’m still considered amateur in using ‘illustrator’, I’m now more comfortable to work on my project solely using this software.:)
Birdz of Play is a newly launched attraction at the Jurong Bird Park. It is a bird-themed funland for families with kids of all ages. There are Wet & Dry Play Zones that are thoughtfully separated for toddlers and older kids and a dedicated Multi-purpose Pavilion where older children can enjoy the Games Room while parents do some shopping at the retail outlet.More info can be found here.
I was lucky enough to be assigned to do the illustration for the info map of this new attraction.
Just a small update. Did the Giant Flying Squirrel and Comet Moth illustration for Night Safari.
Messenger Pigeon or homing pigeon is a variety of domestic pigeon derived from the Rock Pigeon. Selectively bred to find its way home over extremely long distances. The wild rock pigeon has an innate homing ability, meaning that it will generally return to its own nest and its own mate. This made it relatively easy to breed from the birds that repeatedly found their way home over long distances. The earliest large scale communication network using pigeons as messengers was established in Syria and Persia about 5th Century BC and In modern times the feral pigeon has been used to great effect during wartime. Some amazing facts about pigeons can be found here.
Passenger Pigeon or Wild Pigeon was a bird that existed in North America, probably once the most numerous bird on earth, until the early 20th century when it went extinct due to hunting and habitat destruction. The last known Passenger Pigeon, Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo in September 1914 .
Below are the 2 illustrations I did for the Messenger and Passenger Pigeon.
